The story
Abandoned by his father after his mother's disappearance, Shinji Ikari grows up far from him until the day Gendo summons him to Tokyo-3. At fourteen, he discovers that he is expected to pilot Evangelion Unit 01 against the Angels. Despite his fear and urge to run away, he agrees in order to protect others and moves in with Misato Katsuragi.
Each battle confronts Shinji with pain, the weight of expectations, and his desire for recognition. His relationships with Rei, Asuka, and Kaworu bring him as much comfort as they do pain, while the connection between Unit 01 and his mother, Yui, is gradually revealed. At the end of the various versions of his story, he must choose between a world without separation and an imperfect existence among others. In Rebuild, he finally confronts Gendo and envisions a world free from Evangelion.
