The story
Raised with Renji in the Rukongai, Rukia enters the Shinigami Academy before being adopted by the noble Kuchiki family. A member of the Thirteenth Division, she remains deeply affected by the death of Kaien Shiba, whom she was forced to kill after he was possessed by a Hollow. Her mission in Karakura Town then leads her to meet Ichigo.
Wounded while protecting the Kurosaki family, Rukia passes on her powers to Ichigo and remains in the human world. Arrested and sentenced to death, she is saved when Aizen's plot is revealed. She then resumes her place among the Shinigami, helps Ichigo regain his powers, and masters her Bankai during the war against the Wandenreich.
