The story
Rei Ayanami is the First Child chosen by Nerv and the pilot of Evangelion Unit 00. Taciturn, isolated, and completely devoted to Gendo Ikari's orders, she has no accessible official past. Her encounter with Shinji and the compassion he shows her gradually awaken emotions she had never learned to express.
His existence is linked to Yui Ikari and Lilith, while Nerv maintains several bodies capable of serving as replacements. Rei, however, develops a will of his own and ultimately chooses to act on his feelings rather than obey Gendo. In the Rebuild films, his various incarnations follow distinct paths, but each discovers, through Shinji and the others, a form of humanity that transcends the role for which he was created.
