The story
Jinshi presents himself as the eunuch in charge of administering the women's quarters of the imperial palace. His exceptional beauty earns him the admiration of almost everyone at court, with the notable exception of Mao Mao, whose indifference immediately piques his curiosity. After discovering that she was the source of a warning that saved Gyokuyō's daughter, he recognizes her medical knowledge and has her appointed as the concubine's taster.
He then regularly calls upon Mao Mao to solve the illnesses, poisonings, and mysteries that threaten the palace. Behind his lighthearted appearance and calculated manner, Jinshi carries heavy responsibilities and conceals a position closely tied to the imperial family. As the conspiracies extend beyond the women's quarters, he relies more heavily on the apothecary's judgment and develops feelings for her that his pragmatic nature greets with disarming coldness.
