The story
Born beneath the corpse of his hanged mother, Guts grew up among mercenaries and learned to survive with a sword in his hand. After killing Gambino in self-defense, he wandered from battlefield to battlefield until Griffith defeated him and recruited him into the Band of the Hawk. Becoming captain of his assault troops, Guts bonded with his companions and Casca, then left the group to pursue his own ambitions.
His return precedes the Eclipse, during which Griffith sacrifices the Fellowship to be reborn as Femto. Guts survives thanks to the Skeleton Stalker, but loses his left arm and right eye while trying to save Casca. Marked as an offering, he becomes the Black Warrior and hunts the Apostles with the Dragon Slayer. His thirst for vengeance gradually gives way to protecting Casca and new companions. The Berserker Armor grants him the strength to face superhuman enemies, at the risk of surrendering his spirit to the Dark Beast.
