The story
Heir and head of the Kuchiki clan, Byakuya commands the Sixth Division of the Gotei 13. He marries Hisana against his family's rules and, after her death, adopts her sister Rukia to fulfill his last promise. Torn between this vow and his duty to uphold the law, he nevertheless refuses to prevent Rukia's execution.
Defeated by Ichigo, Byakuya acknowledges the Substitute Shinigami's determination and protects Rukia when Aizen's betrayal is revealed. He then battles the Espadas and the Wandenreich. Severely wounded by As Nödt, he survives thanks to the care of the Zero Division and returns to defend the Soul Society with a renewed mastery of Senbonzakura.
